With Covid19 challenging our summer plans, we’re all looking for creative ways to connect and have fun. And, of course, Worcester organizations are creating amazing ways for us to spend time together ‘virtually’! Here are some of our favorites.
For the Avid Reader:
Local radio station WICN has some great ideas for what we should all be reading this summer. Check in with their Instagram to see WICN radio host, Mark Lynch’s weekly Quarantine Reading recommendations for Everyone Who Has Sheltered in Place a Bit Too Long.
Some of his ideas are whimsical and fun, like Hooray for Hollywood where he recommends 3 books that go into further detail about the films we’ve been watching in quarantine. Another post focuses on Food, Glorious Food, where you can whet your appetite with books on hunting mushrooms, traveling the world for food inspiration, and learning more about the wild salmon industry.
If food is not your thing, you can check out his recommendations for books to read about different styles of music. From Zydeco to Blue Grass to Soul, there’s something for every music lover on his list.

For the Researcher, Job Hunter, and Knowledge Seeker:
The Worcester Public Library has inspired generations of learners in and around Worcester. During quarantine, they’ve got a fabulous group of virtual programs available to all of us from the comfort of our own homes. Click here to learn more about these offerings.
Resume Writing Support
Covid19 has changed things in our economy. Whether you’re looking for a new career or a short-term job for the summer, it can be confusing knowing where to begin. The library has a great option with Resume Writing Support. To get started, you can upload your resume and/or your cover letter for proofreading and editing from a Certified Resume Librarian. Turn around time is quick. You’ll hear back within 3 business days and you’ll be ready to apply for that new opportunity.
Genealogy Research Assistance
If you’re a fan of shows like Who Do You Think You Are, Finding Your Roots, and the newest addition The Genetic Detective, you’re going to love this! The Worcester Public Library offers Genealogy Research Assistance. You simply fill out a form with your question and suggest a time you’d like to meet, and library staff will get back to you to help you find the answers you are looking for.
And if you didn’t find something great to read from the WICN Instagram recommendations, the librarians at Worcester Public Library are sharing a video series where they recommend 4 books to read each week. Each one of these books is available on your smart phone, tablet, or computer with the OverDrive app or Libby app. Or you can reserve a copy online and take advantage of Curbside Pick-up. Click here to see the Weekly Reads series on YouTube.
For the Art Lover:
Our local museums have gotten so creative! Have you seen the Worcester Art Museum’s #EdibleWAM submissions on Instagram? It’s a photo series where a piece of art is compared with something someone baked. Click here to check out their Instagram account.
The museum is inviting all of us to join in “creating edible versions of your favorite artworks from the Worcester Art Museum’s collection, and enjoy an artful treat!” To see what others have contributed click here and click here to browse their collection to find what artwork inspired you. Then post to your Instagram account tagging @WorcesterArtMuseum or #EdibleWAM, and they will share your image!
